Darryl McCauley, the half-brother of Dane Cook on his mother’s side, was sentenced by a Massachusetts judge Wednesday to between five and six years behind bars for embezzling millions from the actor/stand-up comedian. McCauley, 45, must also serve 10 years of probation and make restitution to Cook, 38.
According to People Magazine, McCauley, who was Cook’s business manager from the early 1990s to late 2008, pleaded guilty to 27 counts of larceny, three counts of forgery, and other charges. He even paid himself $3 million straight out of Cook’s account.
News broke of McCauley stealing money from his brother in 2008, less than a year after Cook’s father died of cancer. Cook’s mother had also died of cancer six months before that in 2006. This string of events caused Cook’s comedy routine to take a darker and more personal turn when he returned to the stage in 2009 for his “Isolated Incident” performance. Although Cook discussed his parents’ deaths in his act, as well as the various criticisms and “haters” he has dealt with over the years, he refused to go into depth about his brother.
Cook also has five sisters, whom he has previously mentioned in his comedy routines.
